Orion180 Insurance

Tech-forward homeowners insurance built for coastal and wind-prone areas — backed by Demotech “A, Exceptional” financial stability.

Is Orion180 a Good Insurance Company?

Start with what Orion180 actually is, because it is more than one company. Orion180 Insurance Services LLC is the managing general agency (MGA) that handles underwriting, risk selection and policy administration. The policies are issued by two Indiana-domiciled insurers Orion180 owns: Orion180 Select Insurance Company, which writes on an admitted basis, and Orion180 Insurance Company, which writes on a non-admitted (excess and surplus lines) basis. In its 2026 IPO prospectus, Orion180 describes itself as the second-largest excess and surplus lines homeowners insurer in the U.S. by direct written premium.

What it does well. Orion180 focuses on homeowners in storm-exposed markets. By its own figures, its largest states in 2025 were South Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia. Its FLEX product lets you choose which perils to cover, set deductibles, add an optional co-pay, and pick replacement cost, actual cash value or stated value for the roof. The prospectus reports that both carriers hold a Demotech Financial Stability Rating of A (Exceptional). The company is not rated by AM Best.

Who it tends to fit. Orion180 is worth a look if your home is coastal or in wind- and hail-prone territory and standard carriers have declined it or priced it high. It also suits owners who want to fine-tune coverage and deductibles themselves.

Honest considerations. Availability depends on the state. Orion180’s state listing shows standard home insurance in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina, and its FLEX product (which it describes as an E&S product) in California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts and Texas. In Illinois and Tennessee it lists flood insurance only, with no homeowners policy. Surplus lines policies come with fewer regulatory protections. In Texas, for example, surplus lines insurers are not members of the state guaranty association. Because FLEX lets you remove perils, a lower FLEX price may simply mean less coverage.

How to evaluate it for your home. On any Orion180 quote, check which company issues the policy and whether it is admitted or surplus lines. Confirm that a Demotech rating satisfies your mortgage lender. Then compare roof settlement (replacement cost, actual cash value or stated value), the wind and hail deductible, any co-pay, and which perils are included, line by line against your other offers.

The clearest way to judge Orion180 is to see it next to the alternatives. Start a quick quote or request a full quote, and we will compare Orion180 with other carriers so you can decide with the details in front of you.

Who Is Orion180?

Orion180 is a modern insurance group headquartered in Melbourne, Florida that combines cutting-edge technology with a human-first approach to homeowners insurance. Founded in 2018, the company has quickly earned a reputation for writing coverage in markets that many traditional carriers avoid — particularly coastal counties and wind-prone regions across the Southeast and beyond.

The company operates under the tagline “Smart. Human. Limitless.” and uses proprietary technology to streamline quoting, binding, and claims processing. Their platform, MY180, gives both agents and policyholders real-time access to policy information, documents, and payments from any device.

History & Heritage

Orion180 was founded in 2018 in Melbourne, Florida by a team of insurance and technology professionals who saw an opportunity to modernize how homeowners insurance is underwritten and delivered. Unlike legacy carriers that rely on decades-old systems, Orion180 was built from the ground up as an insurtech company — purpose-designed to be fast, transparent, and responsive.

Within just a few years, Orion180 expanded beyond Florida into multiple states, including Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina. The company writes through two entities: Orion180 Select Insurance Company for admitted markets and Orion180 Insurance Company for surplus lines, particularly in high-wind coastal zones. In 2023, Orion180 received approval to write in its home state of Florida, marking a significant milestone. The company has continued to grow through record-setting reinsurance agreements, ensuring strong financial backing for policyholders even through active hurricane seasons.

What They’re Known For

  • Coastal and wind coverage: Orion180 writes homeowners policies in coastal counties where many carriers have pulled out or added exclusions. Their FLEX Home Insurance product is specifically designed for properties with elevated exposure to wind, hail, and hurricane damage.
  • Insurtech platform: The MY180 platform allows agents to quote and bind policies in minutes. Policyholders can manage their coverage, make payments, file claims, and download documents through the MY180 app or web portal.
  • Fast claims handling: Orion180 uses technology-driven claims processing to accelerate response times. Their system routes claims efficiently and keeps policyholders informed with real-time status updates.
  • Broad product lineup: Beyond standard homeowners coverage, Orion180 offers flood insurance, landlord/dwelling fire policies, condo coverage, and specialty products for higher-value homes and jewelry.
  • Agent-friendly tools: Independent agents appreciate Orion180’s fast quoting engine, responsive underwriting team, and robust agent portal — making it easy to find the right coverage quickly.

Why We Partner With Orion180

At Better Choice Insurance Group, we chose to partner with Orion180 because they fill a critical gap in the market. When clients come to us with properties in wind-prone areas — whether it is a home near the coast or a property in a county with a history of severe storms — many carriers either decline the risk entirely or price the policy out of reach. Orion180 steps in with competitive rates and comprehensive coverage where others will not.

We also appreciate how easy Orion180 makes the process for both our team and our clients. Their quoting platform is fast, their underwriting is responsive, and their MY180 app gives policyholders genuine control over their policy. When a client calls us with questions about their Orion180 policy, we can get answers quickly — and so can they. That kind of efficiency matters when someone is dealing with a claim after a storm.
